Chasing Character: Unravelling the Tapestry of Home Trends in 2024

Do we ever truly understand what buyers are looking for? What features draw them in? which send them running for the hills?
Can we ever definitively answer this question?
Possibly not because, as with everything, one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!
Let's begin with aspects that consistently rank among the most sought after when we ask our buyers' for their preferences. Character holds a significant sway in the market, as properties brimming with charm always find eager buyers. Exposed beams and Crittall windows continue to enchant, seamlessly blending old world charm with contemporary design. It's not merely about preserving period features such as fireplaces and cornices anymore; it's about honouring the bones of a home. From raw floorboards to weathered stone to lime plaster walls, we are accustomed to seeing home trends across social media platforms telling us what’s ‘in’ and what’s not.
As we say here at Chapter "It's your home, so you do you".
For me, lime plaster walls take centre stage in 2024, while bare plaster finds its place in period homes. And if you prefer to paint, the Pantone colour of the year, 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, is an absolute delight!
On the subject of colours we are seeing a real change from the darker tones of recent years to bold yet comforting hues. Think of earthy palettes like terracotta, rich greens inspired by nature and warm neutrals that exude calm. We've noticed a growing appetite among buyers for bold and unconventional choices. Personality and authenticity are key.
The era of harsh spotlights is behind us; soft, natural light is the way forward. Warm lighting, natural materials and bespoke touches all add character and warmth to every space. Quality craftsmanship speaks volumes, from elegant door handles to timeless Shaker kitchens. You no longer need to break the bank, as even high street shops offer paintable kitchens, a bonus for those looking to update their interiors. And gardens? Forget about manicured lawns; think wild meadows and organic simplicity, fostering wildlife habitats!
Regardless of the type of home—be it modern, period, apartment, or house—buyers yearn for light. In homes targeted towards families, flexibility is paramount, with rooms that adapt to family life and remote work. And let us not overlook the growing desire for self-care spaces within the home.
In 2024, we are witnessing a significant shift towards embracing sustainable living and wellness. Features like solar panels, heat pumps and rainwater harvesting are no longer merely eco-friendly add-ons; they're essential elements of a modern home. This shift comes on the heels of the UK Government's implementation of the Green Deal, a policy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency in new build houses. The aim is to create homes that are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and cost-effective for homeowners, all whilst reducing the UK’s carbon footprint.
As I always say, amidst a sea of trends, timeless design and sustainability are the cornerstones of a home that speaks to the heart. Whether it is a Victorian gem or a sleek modern masterpiece, finding the perfect home is about what speaks to you and what nourishes your soul.
